Rotary International’s pursuit of peace was inscribed early when at the outset of WWI in 1914 delegates to the Rotary International convention in Houston adopted a resolution that called for the convening of an international peace conference. A significant component to that effort today includes the Rotary Peace Fellowship Program. RI provides 130 Peace Fellowships to non-Rotarians each year to prepare them to serve as peacemakers throughout the world. Read on to learn more about her.

Stela Almeida is one of two Peace Fellow candidates that District 5500’s Peace Committee is mentoring this year.

Stela earned a BA in International Relations and Diplomacy from Joaquim Chissano University in her home country of Mozambique.  She has been an investigative journalist and is currently an intern at the United States Embassy in Mozambique.  At the embassy she monitors human rights, political developments and conflict, and prepares summaries for senior leadership.  Stela also is an active volunteer. Her volunteer work incudes facilitating donations on different occasions to victims of hurricanes and  terrorism.

The Northernmost province in Mozambique is suffering atrocious terrorist activity by Al Shabaab. With the Peace Program certification and the support of Rotary and other partners, Stela intends to work with women and children survivors of these terrorist attacks, to help them develop resiliency in the face of their traumas.

Please join us in our gratitude for Stela and in our wishes for her success as D5500 mentors her through the fellowship application.  If you know of an individual you believe is a good candidate for one of Rotary’s Peace Fellowships, please let us know.

Peace Fellows are one focus of the District 5500 Peacebuilder Committee. Many of you are in clubs with Peacebuilding Committees. Thank you for your dedication.  To others, we hope you will consider making peace a focus in your club. We invite all to join our District Peacebuilders Network Meeting which meets every two months.  To join our meetings or to find out how to become a Peacebuilder Club, please contact Ellie Patterson at or Mary Straus at
