Maui Relief Update

The outpouring of support from Rotarians in D5500 and around the world has been phenomenal. Rotarians of District 5000 (Hawaii) are on Maui helping at shelters, finding housing, moving supplies, and more. Relief funds are arriving from Rotarians everywhere. 

"The power of Rotary is real," says District Governor Mark Merriman, D5000. "I appreciate your sincere love, care and concern."

District 5500 - A Culture of Care

District Governor Don is asking District 5500 Rotarians to help create a culture of care throughout the district by making mental health a priority through a District 5500 Mental Health Initiatives Action Group. We have a few members already interested, and we need additional volunteers from across the district to join in. If you are interested, please contact DG Don at donjorgensen@comcast.net.

Annual Conference Highlight - Author David Ambroz

Meet our Friday Conference Luncheon Speaker. Thirty years ago, David Ambroz was a homeless, malnourished child being removed from his mentally ill mother's custody after years of neglect and abuse. Today David is a national poverty and child welfare expert and advocate, recognized by President Obama as an American Champion of Change.

Prof. Mazin Qumsiyeh of Palestine Will Speak Aug. 29 & 30
 
Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh, President of the Rotary Club of Bethlehem, Palestine, and Founder/Director of the Palestinian Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability at Bethlehem University, is being hosted by Tucson Verde and Sierra Vista Rotary clubs for two presentations. This is a rare opportunity for Tucson and southeastern regional club members to learn firsthand about the struggle of Palestinians and Israelis to arrive at a status of peaceful co-existence in the Holy Land, and to sponsor Global or District grants to aid Palestinian refugees and environmental projects in the Holy Land.

RYLA Registration is OPEN!

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a 4-day, 3-night leadership workshop for ages 14-18 in grades 9-12. These students come together from communities across District 5500 and are joined by Rotary Exchange students from other countries for a leadership camp experience in Prescott, Arizona. Each delegate is sponsored by a local Rotary Club.

Introducing the Rotaract Services Auction!

Rotaractors will be auctioning off repeating and special auction items to Rotarians to raise money for our larger service projects, such as IT support, promotional flyers, seasonal services, and more. 

Rotaract is launching a new fundraiser idea of auctioning off our services to Rotarians and their clubs to raise funds for service projects such as our annual Dental Distribution where we distribute dental bags to elementary students at Title 1 schools. Last year we were able to donate more than 700 bags and would like to do this again!
